  1. Type II diabetes mellitus : Plant part used: Tuber. Documented pharmacological profile: Metformine-like.
    According to Maithili V (2011): To evaluate the antidiabetic activity of ethanolic extract of Dioscorea alata in glucose loaded & alloxan induced diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced by alloxan monohydrate (120 mg/kg, i.p.) in physiological saline after overnight fasting for 18 hours. According to Guo X (2015): Peel extract exerted better bioactivity than flesh extract, which indicated that purple yam peel, a kind of kitchen waste that is always overlooked, might serve as a promising therapeutic natural product for the prevention of diabetes or other advanced glycation end products-related diseases.
  2. Doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy : Plant part used: Tuber.
    According to Chen CT (2017): The present study was designed to explore whether yam could protect the heart from doxorubicin (DOX)-induced oxidative stress leading to cardiotoxicity in vivo. purpurea, against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in experimental mice were evaluated.
  3. Osteoporosis : Plant part used: Tuber.
