Spermacoce verticillata (Makônnèt) : medicinal properties in alcoholic extraction

Spermacoce verticillata (Makônnèt) — family Rubiacées.

This database documents alcoholic (ethanol) extractions of active substances. Our monograph currently lists 7 indications in alcoholic extraction for this species. The monograph draws on 40 scientific references recorded for the species.

Therapeutic indications in alcoholic extraction:

Note: scientific reference excerpts are kept in their original language (most often English), without translation, to respect the source text of publications.

  1. Osteoarthritis, arthritis, rheumatism, oedema : Plant part used: Aerial parts. Documented pharmacological profile: Indometacine-like.
Selon Abdullahi-Gero HS (s.d.) : Carrageenan & formalin induced rat paw oedema were used to investigate anti-inflammatory effects. The ethanol leaf extract of BV (EEBV) was investigated for possible analgesic & anti-inflammatory effects in mice & rats. Selon LIMA LC (2018) : To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for the anti-inflammatory & antinociceptive activities for S.
  2. Bacterial infection : Plant part used: Aerial parts. Documented pharmacological profile: Neomycine-like, Pénicilline-like.
Selon Baldé AM (2015) : Extracts of the plant species were found to exhibit in vitro moderate to weak antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus viridians, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycobacterium fortuitum, Gardnerella vaginalis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Candida albicans & Candida tropicalis. The antimicrobial action is closely related to the presence of alkaloids. Selon AREMU SO (2016) : The extracts were tested for the presence of different phytochemicals qualitatively, & were also tested against some Gram-positive organisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative organisms (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi) & some fungi implicated in dermatophytic infections (Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis, Epidermophyton floccosum).
  3. Fungal infection : Plant part used: Aerial parts. Documented pharmacological profile: Nystatine-like.
Selon Aremu SO (2025) : This study revealed that the root extract of BV plant has an antimicrobial effect against multidrug-resistant bacteria & also antifungal potential.

Further indications (including other extraction modes where applicable), dosages, precautions for use and full scientific references are available in the complete monograph.
