Pogostemon cablin (Patjouli) : medicinal properties in alcoholic extraction

Pogostemon cablin (Patjouli) — family Lamiacées.

This database documents alcoholic (ethanol) extractions of active substances. Our monograph currently lists 8 indications in alcoholic extraction for this species. The monograph draws on 70 scientific references recorded for the species.

  1. Bacterial infection : Plant part used: Sheet. Documented pharmacological profile: Amoxicilline-like, Gentamycine-like.
Selon Dechayont B (2017) : aureus , & Streptococcus pyogenes with zone diameters of 11.67±1.53 , 10.33±2.52 , & 10.33±1.15 mm, respectively. The ethanolic extract had the greatest activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus , methicillin sensitive S. Selon Kim K (2015) : Compounds 1-3 displayed weak antibacterial activity against two gram-positive bacteria, Bacillus subtilis & Staphylococcus aureus.
  2. Pulmonary inflammation, acute lung injury, pulmonary oedema : Plant part used: Aerial parts. Documented pharmacological profile: Dexamethasone-like.
Selon Su Zuqing (2015) : Patchouli alcohol (PA) is a tricyclic sesquiterpene isolated from Pogostemon cablin, which exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-influenza & cognitive-enhancing bioactivities. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of PA on acute lung injury (ALI) induced by intratracheal instillation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in mice. Selon Li YC (2012) : Lung inflammation was reduced significantly after PA administration, & the effect may be mediated, at least in part, by regulating the lung levels of inflammatory cytokines.
  3. Immunodeficiency : Plant part used: Aerial parts. Documented pharmacological profile: Lévamisole-like.
Selon Liao JB (2012) : Conclusion: These results suggest that PA has significant immunomodulatory properties which probably act by activating mononuclear phagocytic system, augmenting humoral immune response while suppressing cellular immune response. The effect of PA from PC on immunological function was studied by macrophage phagocytosis, immune organ index, serum immunoglobulin level & delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) in mice that were administered orally doses of 20, 40 & 80 mg/kg.

Further indications (including other extraction modes where applicable), dosages, precautions for use and full scientific references are available in the complete monograph.
